It was 15 years ago today. While January 8, 2001 may have started off as a normal winter day, it will forever go down as the day fashion history was made. Forget Obama’s Inauguration and Kimye’s wedding, this is the most important day in past 20 years. It was the day that Britney “Godney” Spears and Justin Timberlake wore the unbelievably flawless denim outfit.
The chain belt. The diamond choker necklace. The matching jean purse. Oh, and all those patches of denim. In one word, the whole outfit is totally iconic.
Your fave could never wear something as incredibly hideous as all denim and still look this amazing. Britney will forever be the queen of pop and denim dresses. She is a true fashion and pop icon. Blessed be Godney. *Praying hands emoji*
Oh, and Justin Timberlake was there too. He looked fine standing next to Britney.
So what makes this outfit so amazing? To be honest the dress is ferociously gross. While the cut and general design is nice, it’s all the patches of denim. Seriously, no one needs that much denim. And don’t get me started on Justin Timberlake’s denim cowboy hat. Why Justin?! But regardless how much of a fashion faux pas these outfits may be, it still holds the record for greatest red carpet look of all time. Perhaps it’s the fact that the two took such a huge fashion risk? I think that it was because Britney and Justin were at the pinnacle of their fame and their relationship was everything. While matching outfits would normally make me gag, Britney and Justin were the original OTP. They were bigger than Beyonce and Jay Z, Kanye and Kim, and Barbie and Ken. Britney and Justin was everyone’s favourite childhood celebrity couple, and this outfit represents their whole wonderful and tragic relationship.
This is probably why the outfit is still one of the biggest moments in pop culture history. ? Till this day people are still commenting on the iconicness of this date.
This is really all I want in life.
And this diehard fan and disciple of Britney paid tribute to the 2001 outfit.
Godney’s impact is real. So Britney the real question is: whatever happened to the denim dress. In my mind Britney has it preserved in a bulletproof climate controlled glass case, waiting to be moved to the Smithsonian. #BringBackTheDenimDress.
